At approximately 10:00 a.m. on 10 July 2023, the vessel Maran Gas Achilles, carrying 70,000 tonnes of LNG, safely berthed at the jetty of the Thi Vai LNG terminal system in Phu My Town, Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province. This was the first LNG cargo imported into Vietnam by Vietnam Gas Corporation (PV GAS) to supply the southern regional market.
PV GAS’s Thi Vai LNG terminal has a storage capacity of 180,000 m³ and an annual throughput capacity of 1 million tonnes of LNG. The jetty was designed to receive LNG carriers of up to 100,000 DWT.
The completion of the Thi Vai LNG terminal project chain was marked by this highly anticipated event. It represented a “historic moment” for Vietnam’s gas industry.
LNG imports are considered an important solution for ensuring national energy security and supporting the long-term transition in power-generation fuels from coal and oil to natural gas. They also contribute to the implementation of Vietnam’s commitments under COP26. CMB was honored to be selected as the consultant for maritime works, including the jetty, navigation channel, and aids to navigation, providing legal services, surveys, feasibility study preparation, detailed design, and maritime safety assurance plans for port operations.
